Folkestone Museum

The project’s objective was to create a warm and welcoming centrally placed museum for the people of Folkestone in the Grade 2 listed Town Hall, making a newly accredited museum of Folkestone which could reunite previously dispersed and hidden collections.

On the ground floor the displays highlight the social history and art collections through the themes of Fashionable Folkestone, Frontline Folkestone and Maritime Folkestone, whilst giving prominence to many figures key in Folkestone’s rich history. The gallery is warm and welcoming, set in deep colours that reflect its seaside location and rich history.

The lower ground floor gallery focuses on the museum’s object-rich collections, coming from early collectors’ cabinets of natural history and paleontology and archaeology collections. The story of ‘Aefre’ a female Anglo-Saxon skeleton that is the star of the collection is a key feature of the gallery. We created a light, bright spacious gallery centred around Aefre. Showcases display the museum’s wonderful collections at their best and a range of mechanical and low-tech interactives encourage visitors to explore the themes and stories.
